The History and Art History Department at George Mason University requires its graduate students to complete courses in new media and digital history. The purpose of the course entitled HIST 697 History and New Media is to provide students with an in-depth study of the methods modern historians use to bring history to the web environment. Students complete several assignments, including a professional quality website. This portfolio will feature the work I have completed for this course.
My name is Antonette Bowman. I am currently pursuing an MA in Art History at George Mason University and an MAT at Johns Hopkins University. I plan to teach AP Art History while I continue with my graduate work. Eventually, I would like to earn a PhD and teach at the university level.

Clio or Kleio, the Greek muse of history and heroic poetry, has found her way into works of art and literature across the ages. During the late Renaissance and Baroque periods, emblem books such as Cesar Ripa’s Iconologia published in 1593, popularized and further established the artistic representation of Clio with specific attributes such as a trumpet, book, or scroll.
In reference to Johannes Vermeer’s 1666 painting entitled The Art of Painting, curators from the National Gallery of Art Washington observe,“By placing the muse of history at the center of his allegory, Vermeer remphasized the importance of history to the visual artist. Theorists argued that the noblest and most highly regarded form ofartistic expression was history painting, a term that encompassed biblical, mythological, and historical subjects, as well as allegories. By creating such paintings, artists demonstrated their knowledge and originality of thought, qualities that raised painting to the elevated status of a liberal art.” Clio ideally symbolizes the fusion of the study of fine art and history.
